In the tradition of yoga and tantra, Kundalini is the dormant life energy — Shakti — coiled like a serpent in three and a half coils at the base of the spine, in the Muladhara chakra. The Sanskrit word 'kundal' means 'coiled.' When the energy awakens, it rises through the central channel, Sushumna, passing through each chakra until it reaches the crown of the head (Sahasrara), where Shakti meets Shiva — pure consciousness. This symbolizes complete awakening: energy and consciousness become one.
Along the spine run three main nadi (energy channels): Ida — lunar, cool, feminine (left nostril), Pingala — solar, hot, masculine (right nostril), and the central Sushumna. Kundalini can only rise when Ida and Pingala are in balance — that’s why yoga works extensively with alternate nostril breathing (nadi shodhana) before even touching the serpent energy.
Classical texts and modern accounts describe: waves of heat or electricity along the spine, tremors and spontaneous movements (kriyas), vivid dreams, surges of euphoria and all-encompassing love, but also periods of anxiety, hypersensitivity, and old emotions resurfacing. Awakening is not a one-time 'fireworks' event — it’s a process that ebbs and flows for months. The key principle: the calmer the nervous system, the gentler the process.
Tradition has warned for thousands of years against the abrupt awakening of Kundalini without preparation: an overwhelmed nervous system may respond with insomnia, anxiety, and, in susceptible individuals, a mental health crisis. Therefore, the journey always starts from the basics: body (asanas), breath (pranayama), ethics (yama/niyama), and a stable psyche. Our Path guides you gently — the practices included here are safe and preparatory. If you have a history of mental health issues or are going through a crisis — consult your practice with a specialist and proceed slowly.
Researchers describe 'kundalini' experiences as real neurophysiological phenomena: waves of autonomic nervous system activity, intense interoception (sensing the inner body), and changes in brain excitation networks during deep meditation and breathwork. Science does not confirm the existence of 'energy' in a physical sense — but it affirms that these practices tangibly change the nervous system, stress levels, and body awareness. Tradition and science describe the same phenomenon in two different languages.
