How to read the moon calendar

Biodynamic gardening tradition sorts the days by the element of the sign the Moon is in:

Root day — Moon in earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): carrots, beetroot, potatoes, onions, garlic, radish, celery.

Leaf day — Moon in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): lettuce, cabbage, spinach, parsley, chives, leafy herbs; a good day for watering.

Flower day — Moon in air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): flowers, broccoli, cauliflower, artichokes, herbs picked for their flowers.

Fruit day — Moon in fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas, pumpkins, fruit trees and bushes.

With a waxing Moon (new to full) tradition says sow above-ground plants; with a waning Moon (full to new) plant root vegetables, prune, weed and harvest for storage. No sowing on the day of a new or full moon.

Hair: a cut during a waxing Moon is said to grow back faster, during a waning Moon to keep its shape longer. Tradition rates days with the Moon in Leo or Virgo as the best for the hairdresser.

This is tradition, not science: no studies confirm an effect of moon phases on plants or hair. The calendar simply helps you plan the year in a calm rhythm.
