Light at the End of the Tunnel: How Science Tries to Explain the Visions of the Dying

A tunnel and a bright light is the most famous image from the threshold of death. Scientists have several explanations, but none accounts for everything.

01

The Hypoxia Hypothesis

When too little oxygen reaches the brain, the function of the peripheral retina and visual cortex is the first to deteriorate. The field of vision narrows towards the centre, which can look like a tunnel with a light at the end. Similar images are described by pilots losing consciousness under high g-forces.

The weakness of this hypothesis: hypoxia usually produces confusion and chaos, whereas NDE accounts are often exceptionally clear and well remembered.

02

Waking Dream, or REM Intrusion

Some researchers link NDE to the intrusion of REM sleep into the waking state — the same mechanism responsible for sleep paralysis. People who have had an NDE more frequently reported previous episodes of sleep paralysis in some surveys, but this line of enquiry still requires more rigorous research.

03

The Chemistry of Stress and the Dying Brain

Under extreme stress the body releases endorphins and other substances that alleviate pain and can produce a sense of calm. Observations have also emerged that in the first moments after cardiac arrest the brains of both animals and humans display a brief surge of synchronised activity. Whether this is responsible for the life review remains unknown.

04

Why the Debate Continues

Each hypothesis explains a fragment of the phenomenon, but none explains it in its entirety. Furthermore, accounts are similar across different cultures yet differ in their details: Christians more frequently see religious figures from their own faith, whilst people in India see messengers of the god of death. This suggests that biology and culture are intertwined in the experience.

For science this remains an open question, and for those who have lived through it, it is usually one of the most important experiences of their lives.

Why do the dying see a light?

The most commonly cited explanations are hypoxia of the visual cortex, the chemistry of stress, and the activity of the dying brain. However, no single hypothesis accounts for all the features of NDE.
