What psychology says
Psychologically, a dream about excrement is often connected with the need to rid oneself of something: emotions, debts, or old unresolved matters.
In English-speaking tradition
In English-speaking folklore and popular culture, dreaming of excrement is widely regarded as a sign of coming money or good fortune — a belief reflected in the common superstition that treading in animal dung brings luck, which persists especially in British and Irish rural tradition. Classic English dream books such as those in the almanac tradition similarly interpreted such dreams as omens of financial gain or unexpected windfall. The idiom "mucky but lucky" captures this folk paradox. Sigmund Freud's influence on popular culture also embedded the association between faeces and money deeply into everyday understanding, via his concept of the "anal character" and the symbolic equation of excrement with gold.
