What psychology says
Dolls in dreams can be an image of a relationship in which someone is "pulling the strings".
In English-speaking tradition
In English-speaking folklore and popular culture, dolls have long carried an unsettling double nature — innocent childhood companions on one hand, and eerie vessels of hidden agency on the other. Classic English dream books, such as those in the tradition of Raphael's Dream Dictionary, generally interpret dolls as symbols of nostalgia, domestic comfort, or unfulfilled maternal or paternal instincts. The idiom "pulling the strings" and the archetype of the puppet-master are deeply embedded in British and American cultural consciousness, reinforcing the dream association between dolls and manipulation. The motif of the living or malevolent doll is well established in popular culture, from the legend of Robert the Doll in Key West to the sinister ventriloquist's dummy of classic British horror anthology films such as Dead of Night (1945).
