What psychology says
Dreams about aliens often express a feeling of being "not of this world", of being different from those around you.
In English-speaking tradition
In English-speaking popular culture, UFOs and alien visitations have been a source of both fascination and anxiety since the post-war era, with Roswell (1947) becoming a defining cultural touchstone; dreaming of UFOs is widely associated in modern dream books with feelings of being an outsider or confronting the utterly unfamiliar. The motif of alien abduction, popularised in works such as Whitley Strieber's *Communion* (1987) and television series like *The X-Files*, has lent the alien encounter dream a strong association with helplessness and the violation of personal boundaries. British and American folklore traditions have no deep pre-modern roots for this symbol, as it is essentially a product of twentieth-century popular mythology, though it draws on older fairy-lore concerning mysterious lights and strange abductions. Popular idioms such as "taken to another planet" and "not from this world" echo the dream's core themes of alienation and wonder.
