What psychology says
Mushroom-picking is a strong family memory in Poland, so such a dream may also be drawing one back to childhood.
In English-speaking tradition
In English-speaking folklore, mushrooms — especially fairy rings — have long been associated with the supernatural and the fairy world, and stumbling upon one was considered both lucky and perilous. Classic British dream books such as those in the tradition of the nineteenth-century "Dream Book and Oracle" tend to link mushrooms with fleeting prosperity and the need for caution, echoing the age-old wariness of mistaking a toadstool for an edible fungus. The idiom "mushrooming" (growing rapidly and unexpectedly) lends the symbol a popular cultural association with sudden, sometimes uncontrollable expansion. Beyond that, specific dream-book references to mushrooms in English tradition are relatively sparse compared to their prominence in Central European oneiromancy.
