Your body doesn’t track time by looking at a watch. One of the essential signals that informs the brain that day has begun is the light that reaches your eyes.
Light influences the circadian system, which regulates sleep and wakefulness, among other functions. The contrast between a bright day and a dark evening is especially significant.
Being outside is more effective than just sitting by a window
Even on a cloudy day, being outdoors typically provides much more light than you would find in an average indoor environment.
It’s not about staring at the sun
You should never look directly at the sun. Simply being outside in natural light is sufficient.
Do the opposite at night
Dim the lights in your home, reduce screen brightness, and avoid harsh lighting before bedtime.
Combine light exposure with a daily routine
The simplest ritual: after waking up, open the curtains, enjoy a drink by the window, and if possible — step outside for 10 to 20 minutes.
What science says
A systematic review of field studies connects daily patterns of light exposure with sleep rhythm and emotional well-being.
