Separate the person from the behavior
“I messed up that conversation” describes an event. “I’m hopeless” creates a global verdict.
Small behaviors matter more than big declarations
The resolution “from today on I’ll be confident” is too broad. A better goal is a behavior: “at the next meeting, I’ll speak up once.”
Self-compassion does not mean indulgence
You can acknowledge a mistake, repair the harm, and learn from it without adding an insulting comment toward yourself.
Design your environment
Willpower is unreliable, which is why effective change often comes down to modifying your surroundings.
Measure the process, not perfection
Once a week, answer three questions: what worked, what threw me off, what will I change by 10%?
What the science says
A meta-analysis of 56 randomized studies on self-compassion interventions found small to moderate effects.
