Rune casting with a time perspective is a legacy of Nordic shamans. Discover how to lay out a reading for the next 3, 6, or 12 months.
Runes are a medium of the spiritual world — they reveal trends, energies, and directions. They never show a 'fixed future,' as free will always prevails, but they provide a map of the emotional landscape.
3-RUNE SPREAD (NORNS): you draw 3 runes representing Urd (the past — what brought you here), Verdandi (the present — where you are), and Skuld (the future/what will happen). This is the simplest and most commonly used method of Nordic divination.
12-MONTH SPREAD: you draw 12 runes, each representing a consecutive month. First, formulate your question: 'what awaits me in the coming year in the area of X (love/work/health)'. Shuffle while focusing. Draw them in order, arranging them in a circle.
INTERPRETATION: darker runes (Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Thurisaz) drawn in specific months are NOT a sentence — they are warnings about what to pay attention to. Lighter runes (Sowilo, Wunjo, Dagaz) drawn in other months indicate when to make important decisions.
THE MOST POWERFUL RUNE: if DAGAZ appears — a lasting transformation and awakening await you. WYRD (the blank rune) signifies something that cannot be predicted. JERA represents just rewards for your work, the harvest over the year.
When to cast: the new moon (for the upcoming cycle), Yule/Samhain (for the whole year), birthdays (for your personal year).
